Laurent Blanc's side extend their lead at the top to six points, but Monaco can cut the gap to three with a win against Marseille on Sunday.
PSG were lacklustre throughout, with both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani unable to assert themselves on the game.
Ibrahimovic's best effort was a 40-yard strike that was pushed around the post by goalkeeper Guy Roland Ndy Assembe towards the end of the first half.
Guingamp had only scored three goals since November before the game but looked dangerous at times against PSG.
Youngster Rachid Alioui volleyed just wide, before his long-range free-kick was turned onto the crossbar by PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.
Cavani had an effort ruled out for offside at the start of the second half, but chances were few after that and the game was seemingly heading towards a goalless draw.
However, as full time approached, Guingamp took a surprise lead when striker Yatabare got ahead of Marquinhos to head in, sparking wild celebrations among the home crowd.
Those celebrations were short lived as Alex nodded in minutes later to earn PSG a point.
PSG boss Laurent Blanc: "It is always difficult to win games. We came here to win even if we had a lot of respect for Guingamp.
"It is disappointing but I am still satisfied that we never gave up and came back to get a deserved point.
"We were not as good today. Why? I don't want to hide behind it but the state of the pitch was deplorable. It is the case for both sides but it handicaps the team that plays the most football."

Brazil and its 'relatively simple' World Cup delays

Dilma Rousseff kicks a ball at Arena das Dunas, Natal, Brazil on 22 January 2014Will Brazil hit or miss its target for completing its stadiums in time for the World Cup?

Mrs Rousseff was speaking on the pitch at the Arena das Dunas in the northern coastal city of Natal, which she had just officially opened with a rather nervous kick of a ball from the centre-spot.
In a rare question-and-answer huddle with Brazilian journalists this week, President Dilma Rousseff pronounced with confidence that the beleaguered new football stadium in the southern city of Curitiba would "definitely" be ready for the World Cup.
It was a rare high-point for Brazil - and its World Cup organisers - after a disastrous week during which a high-level Fifa delegation had seen, warts and all, the state of the country's readiness for the tournament that begins in mid-June.
The governing body of world football is not known for precipitating political rows or disputes with its member nations. Quite the opposite, in fact. Fifa officials are often accused of cosying up to politicians and business in host countries in order to help facilitate whichever event may be taking place there.
But, with Brazil, even Fifa has had to speak out.
First stop on the week-long visit was the new Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo, which is due to hold the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia.
A terrible accident at the end of November, when a crane collapsed on part of the roof, not only killed two workers but also pushed back the timetable for the stadium's completion.

Start Quote

As Fifa's secretary-general toured the site, the crane was still embedded in the roof. Jerome Valcke nodded thoughtfully as local officials outlined their plans to complete the project by early April, barely six weeks before the most important football match since the last World Cup final in 2010.
Sao Paulo is not an isolated case. Six of Brazil's 12 World Cup stadiums missed the end of 2013 deadline.
While such delays are not unique to Brazil, or to the World Cup, they are indicative of a chaotic, troubled process.
Mr Valcke's inspection tour was then due to head west to Cuiaba and north to Manaus where the Arena da Amazonia is also running late. (It was also the site of a fatal accident in December when an untethered worker fell to his death from a roof.)
Dozens of workers the BBC spoke to this week said they had not been paid for weeks and were coming under tremendous pressure to finish the project.
In response, stadium bosses denied anyone was coming under undue pressure and that safety standards had been tightened since the tragedy in December.
Lost opportunity
However, pressing news from southern Brazil forced a highly unusual change to Mr Valcke's plans.
Arena da Baixada, Curitiba, 16 Dec 13Renovation work on Curitiba's stadium has been way behind schedule
The news from Curitiba was not good. Contractual disputes and financing "issues" among other problems meant the city's new Arena da Baixada was not just weeks but potentially months behind schedule.
What the Fifa team saw shocked them. Mr Valcke said he "did not like it" and was disturbed to see so many delays.
In an announcement that shocked the Brazilian government and its football establishment, Mr Valcke declared that unless things visibly improved before the committee's next visit in early February, Curitiba would be excluded from the tournament and the four scheduled games moved to other grounds.
Later in the week, it was all smiles and handshakes as Mr Valcke and President Rousseff met up in Natal for the inauguration of the Arena das Dunas.
But out of camera shot, as Mrs Rousseff spoke to local officials and dignitaries, Mr Valcke watched on from the stands, frowning and pensive.
'Rush job'
Even in Natal, all is not as it seems.
The United States coach and former German striker Jurgen Klinsmann had earlier in the week described the new venue as "beautiful".
While the pitch certainly looks ready to hold World Cup matches, the exterior structure looks hastily and haphazardly put together.
Lagging and insulation hang out everywhere from the upper areas. The corrugated roof covering has been roughly cut and put in place in what can only be described as a "rush job".
Insulation and lagging are visible in several parts of the Natal stadiumInsulation and lagging are visible in several parts of the Natal stadium
From a distance the Natal stadium resembles the smooth dunes that characterise this stunning part of the country, but close-up it leaves a lot to be desired.
Brazilians are passionate about their football and are rightly proud of their country's unparalleled record in the World Cup.
They also expect their current side to win this tournament on home ground, adding a sixth winner's star to the crest on the famous gold shirt.
But everywhere I travel in this vast country, touring the World Cup venues, I hear the same complaints and misgivings. From Manaus to Cuiaba to Rio de Janeiro, many Brazilians regard the tournament as a lost opportunity.
To start with it has cost the country, and individual state governments, billions of dollars. Initial promises that private finance would cover the cost of building new stadiums evaporated and about 80% of the bill is now being met from the public purse.
More damning, though, are the cancelled or delayed infrastructure projects that were meant to accompany the new stadiums and boost wider development in host cities.
Promised rapid transit systems, light rail, airport upgrades and other transport initiatives have all been quietly shelved or radically downgraded in Manaus, Salvador and numerous other venues.
Jerome Valcke in CuritibaJerome Valcke has been critical of Brazil's World Cup preparations
I am a passionate football fan and consider myself very fortunate to be based in Brazil covering such a huge sporting event, but the more I see of how Brazil is preparing to host the tournament, the more I am convinced the country as a whole will not reap much benefit.
As President Rousseff spoke on the pitch in Natal, no-one thought to ask her how she could be so confident that, somehow, officials down in Curitiba will turn things around in just a couple of weeks.
Who has given her such "guarantees"? Is it just typical Brazilian optimism, or does the president know something which the damning images from Curitiba and Fifa's unusually critical statement failed to convey?
Flying straight from Natal to the global economic forum in Switzerland, Mrs Rousseff made a "courtesy visit" to Fifa headquarters in Zurich.
After a recent spat over Twitter about Brazil's preparation for what is, after the Olympic Games, the second biggest sporting event on earth, the two presidents (Rousseff of Brazil and Sepp Blatter of Fifa) were again singing from the same hymn sheet.
Completing the remaining stadiums and infrastructure projects was "a relatively simple" matter, the Brazilian leader assured the head of world football.
Jerome Valcke and the organisation he runs must share some of the blame for the way these tournaments are scheduled and financed.

Gareth Bale had to be substituted at half time for Real Madrid, who won 2-0 to go top of La Liga.

Gareth Bale had to be substituted at half-time with an injury as Cristiano Ronaldo scored to help send Real Madrid clear at the top of La Liga with victory over Granada.
Wales international Bale was injured by Jeison Murillo's rough challenge with the game still goalless.
Despite that blow, Real took the lead just before the hour when Ronaldo rifled in his 31st of the season.
Karim Benzema then sealed the win, slotting in from Marcelo's cross.
Real top the standings with 53 points, two ahead of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who play Malaga and Rayo Vallecano respectively on Sunday.
The two sides could move ahead of Real with victories, but the form of Carlo Ancelotti's side will undoubtedly be concerning for them.
Real have not lost in the league since the end of October and have now won 10 times in their last 11 games.
The home fans' buoyant pre-match mood was heightened as Ronaldo paraded the Ballon d'Or he won earlier this month.
Cristiano Ronaldo paraded his Ballon d'Or trophy prior to kick off and fans celebrated by holding up gold-coloured sheets of paper.
Ronaldo paraded his Ballon d'Or trophy before kick-off and fans celebrated by holding up gold-coloured sheets of paper
Real's intensity was high from the outset as Ronaldo shot just wide inside the opening 10 minutes, before a Dani Carvajal cross was diverted onto his own crossbar by visiting midfielder Manuel Iturra.
Bale, too, was looking bright but took a heavy knock when he clashed with Murillo. The former Tottenham forward managed to continue until half-time but was replaced by Jese Rodriguez at the interval.
Rodriguez's introduction added vigour to Real's attack and Granada goalkeeper Roberto did well to deny efforts from Angel Di Maria and Luka Modric.
But the home side finally made the breakthrough just before the hour when Modric passed to Ronaldo inside the area and the Portugal star worked some space for himself before hitting a low drive into the far corner.
The woodwork then prevented him adding a second as his free-kick smashed against the bar.
However, Real put the game beyond the visitors late on when a fine, flowing move involving Ronaldo and Marcelo was turned home by Benzema for his fifth goal in his last six games.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti:
"Tonight we will sleep better than we have on other Saturdays, but we have to keep fighting because it is not always easy as the first half today showed.
"After the knock [Gareth Bale] received he didn't feel comfortable. It just disorientated him a little bit and we thought it best to bring him off. He will be fine for the next game.

Manchester United's season of misery hit new depths as Sunderland won a slapstick penalty shoot-out to secure a Capital One Cup final place against Manchester City at Wembley.

Sunderland stood less than two minutes from Wembley when United keeper David De Gea hopelessly fumbled Phil Bardsley's shot in the dying moments of extra-time after Jonny Evans had earlier put United level over the two legs.
The Black Cats could not hold out and Javier Hernandez's goal seconds from the end spared De Gea but subjected Old Trafford to the drama of spot-kicks that almost descended into farce.
In a blizzard of wild misses and fine saves, only three of the 10 spot kicks were scored.

Paying the penalty

Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj missed a penalty against Sunderland
  • Manchester United have scored a total of four penalties in their last three shoot-outs
  • It was only Man Utd's second defeat in their last 10 League Cup semi-final ties. They last lost at this stage in 2004-05

Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones were off target for United while Sunderland's heroic goalkeeper Vito Mannone denied Adnan Januzaj and crucially Rafael, the stop that sent Gus Poyet's side to the final on 2 March.
Darren Fletcher was the only United player to score and Moyes once again cut a dejected figure as he walked off defeated at the end.
Before they could celebrate, Sunderland's magnificent 9,000-strong support suffered agonies of their own, with Craig Gardner and Steven Fletcher missing while Marcos Alonso and Ki Sung-Yueng scored before De Gea saved from Adam Johnson when he had the chance to seal the win.
Mannone had the final say against Rafael - sparking scenes of wild celebration among Sunderland's players and fans.
It was a triumph they deserved as their belief never wavered, even deep into injury-time, and a Wembley final will surely act as a tonic in their attempt to stay in the Premier League.
Before kick-off, Old Trafford was buzzing with the news of Juan Mata's imminent arrival from Chelsea - and a largely abject performance from Moyes's team was the perfect illustration of why United are prepared to break the club record transfer fee to land the Spaniard.
And now, barring the extremely unlikely event of this fading United side winning the Champions League, Moyes will end his first season in charge without a trophy.
United were again without injured Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie but they opened at a high tempo in an attempt to swiftly wipe out Sunderland's lead from the first game and Mannone was called into action to block Hernandez's header as he stole in on Januzaj's free-kick at the far post.
Sunderland , however, were solid and well-organised enough to give United an anxious moment in the 18th minute when Fabio Borini latched on to Johnson's fine pass and sent a spectacular volley inches over the bar.
The mood inside Old Trafford was one of growing frustration but this was eased when they finally broke through eight minutes before the break.
Sunderland had survived a scramble after Darren Fletcher headed Shinji Kagawa's cross against the post and Mannone blocked Welbeck's follow up - but they did not escape for long.

Juan Mata: Chelsea accept Manchester United's £37m bid

Manchester United have had a bid, believed to be in the region of £37m, accepted by Chelsea for Spanish midfielder Juan Mata.
The 25-year-old will have a medical on Thursday before completing a move to the Premier League champions.
Mata is expected to sign a four-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford.
The Spain international, who has won 32 caps, said goodbye to team-mates and staff at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Wednesday.

Mata at Chelsea

2011-12: 54 appearances, 12 goals, Champions League winner, FA Cup winner
2012-13: 64 appearances, 20 goals, Europa League winner
2013-14: 17 appearances, 1 goal
(Stats are for all competitions)
United continue to deny having made a bid for the playmaker, but it is understood they have made an offer through intermediaries working on the deal.
Manager David Moyes declined to answer questions on Juan Mata after his side's Capital One Cup semi-final defeat by Sunderland.
Members of the media were informed before the post-match news conference that Moyes would be answering questions on the game only and when asked afterwards about Mata, the Scot said simply: "We are not saying anything."
Should the deal go, through, it would break United's previous record transfer - the £30.75m they paid Spurs for Dimitar Berbatov in September 2008.
Mata has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after struggling to hold down a regular starting place under Jose Mourinho.
On Tuesday, Chelsea insisted that Mata, who had been voted the club's player of the year two seasons in a row, was not for sale.
But the player, who was part of the Spain squad which won the World Cup in 2010 and European Championship in 2012, has been substituted in nine of his 13 Premier League appearances for the Blues this season, prompting speculation other clubs could bid for him in the January transfer window.

Australian Open 2014: Dominika Cibulkova reaches semi-finals

Dominika Cibulkova reached the second Grand Slam semi-final of her career as she outclassed Simona Halep at the Australian Open.
The Slovak, seeded 20, provided one of the shocks of the tournament when she beat Maria Sharapova in round four.
And she continued that form against 11th seed Halep, recovering from serving three double faults in one game to take the first set.
She then broke immediately at the start of the second to set up a 6-3 6-0 win.
The 24-year-old will meet either Agnieszka Radwanska or Victoria Azarenka in the last four on Thursday.

Real Madrid beat Espanyol to extend winning streak

eal Madrid extended their winning run to eight games as Karim Benzema scored the only goal against Espanyol in their Copa del Rey quarter-final first-leg.
Record signing Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo started alongside Benzema in a strong Madrid line-up.
Bale provided the assist for Benzema's goal, flicking Alvaro Arbeloa's cross on for the France forward to head in.

Manchester City eased into their first League Cup final in 38 years with a record 9-0 aggregate victory against semi-final opponents West Ham.

Holding a seemingly impregnable 6-0 first-leg lead, City strikers Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero combined to complete the formalities at Upton Park.
Third round: Wigan (H) 5-0
Fourth round: Newcastle (A) 2-0
Quarter-finals: Leicester (A) 3-1
Semi-finals: West Ham (H) 6-0 & (A) 3-0
An unmarked Negredo nodded in, Aguero clipped past Jussi Jaaskelainen and the Spaniard barged through to net.
City will face either Manchester United or Sunderland at Wembley on 2 March.
Cross-city rivals United host Sunderland in their semi-final second leg on Wednesday as they try to overturn a 2-1 home win in the reverse fixture.

Paul Di Resta makes Mercedes return after Force India exit

Paul Di Resta will drive in the German Touring Car Championship this season after rejoining Mercedes.
The Briton won the title in 2010 before moving to Formula 1, but lost his seat at Force India for 2014 to Mexican driver Sergio Perez, who had been discarded by McLaren.
With no other F1 seats available, the 27-year-old has opted to move on.
"Mercedes-Benz has given me a car I can use to fight for the title," he said. "I realise that it will not be easy."
Di Resta drove in the German series for three seasons from 2007, earning six wins, six pole positions and seven fastest laps in his 42 races before moving to F1, where he scored 121 points in 58 grands prix for Force India.
He will join another British former DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) champion - 2005 winner Gary Paffett - at Mercedes and will be one of seven former title winners to have confirmed their participation in the series.

World Cup 2014: Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero can shine in Brazil

Federico Insua is one of those number 10 playmakers that Argentine football produces in such quantity.
With a nice left foot and a good range of passing he is an interesting player, although at 34 his best days are now behind him.
He was not quite good enough to impose himself on the European game - he had disappointing seasons in Spain, Germany and Turkey - but he has been a strong club player in Argentina, where he currently turns out for Velez Sarsfield

Crystal Palace have Europe's biggest squad, says new study

Crystal Palace have assembled the largest squad in Europe's top 31 divisions this term, a new study says.
The CIES Football Observatory  has found that Palace have 34 players on their books who have played in this or the previous two seasons.
That outstrips the likes of Arsenal, Italian side Chievo and French team Ajaccio, who have 31 squad members.
Among several revealing insights, the study shows the movement of players in Europe has never been so high.

Bert Williams: Former Wolves and England goalkeeper dies

Former Wolves and England goalkeeper Bert Williams has died, aged 93.
Williams joined Wolves from Walsall after the Second World War and went on to make 420 appearances for the club.
He won the FA Cup in 1949 and the Division One title in 1954 during a 14-season spell at Molineux.
Williams won 24 caps for England and was in goal for the 1-0 defeat by the United States at the 1950 World Cup. He was the oldest living England international prior to his death.
He received an MBE for services to football and charity in the Queen's Birthday honours list in June 2010.
Williams was involved in several fundraising campaigns for the Alzheimer's Society after his wife Evelyn died from the illness in 2002.
Wolves chairman Steve Morgan described Williams as "a fantastic footballer" and "a true gentleman who loved Wolves".
"As a young football fan who used to read about the achievements of that all-conquering Wolves team of the 1950s, it was an honour and a privilege to have been able to meet Bert on so many occasions since I arrived at the club in 2007.

Nicolas Anelka: FA charges West Brom striker over gesture

West Brom's Nicolas Anelka faces a minimum five-match ban if found guilty by the Football Association of making the controversial "quenelle" gesture.
The striker made the sign, described as an inverted Nazi salute, after scoring against West Ham on 28 December.
Anelka was given a 34-page document detailing the allegations and has until 18:00 GMT on 23 January to respond.
West Brom sponsor Zoopla will end its agreement with the club at the end of the season because of the incident.
The former France international used the "quenelle" the day after the French government announced it was trying to ban controversial comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala's shows over the gesture.
France's Sport Minster Valerie Fourneyron accused Anelka of a "shocking and disgusting" act, saying "there was no place for anti-Semitism on the football field."

Euro fall below the European Central Bank's Target in December

The European Union's statistics agency revealed on Tuesday that an initial reading illustrates rise in consumer prices by just 0.8% over the 12 months to December. The figure was reduced from 0.9% in November.
The rate of inflation was lesser in October, when it touched 0.7%. This prompted the ECB to slice its standard interest rate to a low of 0.25%. This was the last action that was taken to motivate the economy. The ECB aims an inflation rate of just below 2.0%.
After removing more-volatile food and energy prices, inflation was just 0.7%.
Different statistics from Eurostat suggested consumer prices are suspected to increase sharply in upcoming months. As per the agency, the increase in prices of goods that were parting factory gates in November decreased for the second straight month. However, the figure was just 0.1%.
Prices at the factory gates do not turn directly into prices paid by consumers as retailers and other service providers must cover up their expenses to make profits.
The ECB's governing council meets that was held on Thursday expects slow growth of 1.1% in 2014 and 1.5% in 2015. As per the prediction, inflation will continue well under its 2% target for two more years.

Former Bank of Israel Governor Nominated To Be Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve

On Friday, President Barack Obama nominated Stanley Fischer the former Bank of Israel Governor to be the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve, and tapped two others to round out the U. S. central bank's top ranks just as it starts winding down its historic economic stimulus.
Fischer is an experienced crisis manager and one of the most prominent economists in the world.  He would succeed Janet Yellen, who is set to take the Fed's helm when Chairman Ben Bernanke's term expires at the end of this month.
Fischer, who is a dual citizen of the United States and Israel, was a long-time professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The departing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and Mario Draghi, the current head of the European Central Bank, were among his students.
Obama is nominating Lael Brainard as a Fed governor.  During Obama's first term, Brainard served as the undersecretary for international affairs at Treasury.  She left the administration recently.  He also is re-nominating Jerome Powell to the Fed for a second term.

Obama said in a statement, "These three distinguished individuals have the proven experience, judgment and deep knowledge of the financial system to serve at the Federal Reserve during this important time for our economy."

Dunedin invests $1.7m in petroleum producers

Dunedin City Council has established that it has invested in oil companies.
Though the council is not saying the names of the companies, however says that it holds shares worth almost $1.7 million in petroleum producers.
The council mentioned, the investments were made through the city's Waipori Fund and accounts for about 5% of its holdings.
Sandy Graham, DCC corporate services group manager said, "Just under 5% of the Fund's equity portfolio is in direct investments in petroleum producers."
The Waipori fund is an investment fund using revenue from the sale of the Waipori Hydroelectric Power Scheme.
The results of that report have not yet been discussed by councillors or made public. Deep sea drilling is by now a sensitive subject in Dunedin, with Anadarko and Shell perched to start exploration off the Otago coast.
In the meantime, tomorrow hundreds of people are planning to take to the water in Otago Harbour in protest of Shell's plans to drill.
The protest has been organised by Oil Free Otago, which will mark the last day of the Oil Free Future Summit taking place in Dunedin.

Protesters aim to create a blockade between Goat and Quarantine Islands, the commercial channel of the harbour.
The summit's website reads, "This nonviolent and legal protest is a symbol and a practice run to show Anadarko and Shell that we will not tolerate them in our waters."

Sean Parnell Announced that State to terminate Partnership with TransCanada under AGIA

Sean Parnell announced on Friday at an Alaska Support Industry Alliance gathering in Anchorage, the state will terminate its partnership with TransCanada under the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA). Parnell also announced that the state will pursue an equity stake in the Alaska gas line.
He said, "As a partner in the gas line project, Alaska will control its own destiny." "Ownership ensures we either pay ourselves for project services or negotiate and ensure the lowest possible costs.  As a partner, Alaskans stand to gain more."
Taking an equity stake in the gas line project would allow the state to receive a share of the profits throughout the entirety of the project stated Parnell.
He mentioned, "Ownership ensures we either pays ourselves for project services or, at the very least, understand, negotiate and ensure the lowest possible costs."
Last year a report commissioned by the state supported the idea of the state taking a 20 to 30 percent stake in the project.  With an approximate cost of $45 billion, that would stand for an investment of at least $9 billion from the state.
The governor said that North Slope producers are on board with the idea of Alaska having ownership of the gas line because it diminishes their capital costs.

Chinese Man Jailed for Poisoning Frozen Dumplings that were Later Exported to Japan

After getting frustrated due to behavior of colleagues and lower wages, a Chinese man injected a highly poisonous pesticide into frozen dumplings that were later exported to Japan.
His actions caused illness to ten people in Japan, who consumed the product. Not only this, diplomatic relations of both the countries have also strained further, as both of the countries debated over where the contamination has taken place.
The Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court has sentenced Lu Yueting, 39, former worker at Hebei-based factory, Tianyang Food Plant, life-term imprisonment. The incident took place in 2008 in which Lu tried to draw attention of his managers by injecting several boxes of frozen dumplings.
The boxes were later exported to Japan as well as in the Chinese city of Chengdu. After carrying out investigation for more than two years, Lu was arrested in 2010 and the trial started in 2013. It was then found that he injected methamidophos, a type of pesticide, in the dumplings.
The incident made 10 people ill including four Chinese and nine Japanese consumers. Initially, when the incident took place, Chinese security and watchdogs had blamed Japanese for the sabotage. There was a scare for Chinese food safety as well. For now, both the countries are having strained relationship over the dispute of the East China Sea.

"One thing is certain.  Neither 2002 Gujarat riots can be forgotten nor people behind it be forgiven," Nitish Kumar told media persons after his weekly "janata darbar" here.
Without naming Modi or the Bharatiya Janata Party, he said some vested interests are trying to ensure that killing of innocent people in the Gujarat communal riots should be forgotten and those behind it forgiven.
But the country is not ready for this because people are sensitive and are concerned about one another.
Sunday, Nitish Kumar attacked Modi when he said that the country's leadership should be handed over to a man who has faith of all sections of people and vision for the entire country.
He also ruled out an alliance of his party, Janata Dal (United) (JD-U), with the Congress in Bihar for the Lok Sabha polls.

"There is no question of an alliance of JD-U with the Congress in Bihar for the Lok Sabha polls," Nitish Kumar told media persons here.
He said media speculations over possibility of the JD-U alliance with the Congress is baseless. "It is a non-existent thing," he said.
But, when asked about a tie-up with the Lok Janshakti Party of Ram Vilas Paswan, he said: "LJP will have to decide with whom it will go in the next general elections."(IANS)

Smoking really does make you look older, a twin study confirms

You know smoking doesn’t do any favors for your face – or your lungs, or your heart, or just about any other part of your body, for that matter! – but a new study of twins hints at the ways the habit makes you look older than you really are.
In what is perhaps the best detail of the study, researchers used the annual Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio (the "Largest Annual Gathering of Twins in the World!") to round up the 79 identical pairs they include in the report. A panel of three plastic surgery residents compared the faces of the twins, one of which had been smoking for at least five years longer than the other.
They identified a few major areas of accelerated aging in the faces of the smoking twins: The smokers' upper eyelids drooped while the lower lids sagged, and they had more wrinkles around the mouth. The smokers were also more likely to have jowls, according to the study, which was published today in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

.
Smoking reduces oxygen to the skin, which also decreases blood circulation, and that can result in weathered, wrinkled, older-looking skin, explains Dr. Bahman Guyuron, a plastic surgeon in Cleveland, Ohio, and the lead author of the study.
The logic of research like this and others like it is this: If threats of cancer, heart and lung disease, or the dangers of second- and third-hand smoke aren’t enough to get people to stop smoking, or to never start in the first place, then why not try appealing to people’s vanity? (The same tactic has been used in an attempt to warn young people away from tanning.)
But if you’re currently a smoker, the point of this research is not to make you feel bad. Because stopping or cutting back on the habit now can make a difference -- in all aspects of your health, including the skin damage to your face. Even the twins who smoked just five fewer years than their siblings had younger-looking faces, the study shows.
“We tell people, as soon as they stop smoking, the repair to not only to their skin but their lungs, their heart vessels -- it starts to repair itself,” says Dr. Robin Ashinoff, medical director of of dermatologic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.

Looking for love? Try the busiest online dating day of the year

New year, new love?
If you’re looking to meet someone new in 2014, there’s apparently one particularly good moment to do it: January 5th at 8:57 PM, according to Match.com.
The powerhouse online dating site has spent years analyzing its dater data, and says it has been able to pinpoint the exact minute when the most daters join the website in hopes of meeting the right person.

“Match.com found that 51% of singles' New Year's resolutions will be to socialize more and focus on finding that special someone, making the desire to connect with someone a driving force for singles to get online after the holidays,” Match president Amarnath Thombre told TODAY.com. “After spending the holidays solo with your mother, aunts and friends badgering you about you singledom, singles are looking to start the New Year off with a renewed approach to finding a relationship.”
And there are other factors at play, too. New Year’s is the time to make resolutions, and that could mean anything from losing weight to trying a new hobby or experimenting with a new wardrobe — all things that happen to pair nicely with dating, and can provide a renewed sense of purpose and excitement.
“The holidays are filled with merriment, cheer, and a concentration of social events. It's natural to want to find a partner to join you," explains Jessica Tom, community director for dating website How About We. "The winter months also bring out a 'coziness instinct'. As it gets darker and colder, people want to find someone to warm up to."
How About We says its membership rises 40 percent in January and February, when users suggest cold-weather dates like ice skating, having a snowball fight, or drinking hot toddies. (The site also offers a separate service to arrange dates for couples looking to keep their relationships fun once they’ve settled down.)
But why would January 5th be the peak day for prospective daters, and not the 1st?
The pros note that the fifth is the first Sunday of the new year, meaning people have returned home from holiday travel, finished unpacking, and finally have time to be alone and focus on themselves.

Drinking diet soda just makes you eat more

Don't depend on diet soda to help you lose weight. A new study shows that overweight and obese people who drink diet beverages consume more calories from food than heavy people who consume sugary drinks, according to a new Johns Hopkins study.
“When you make that switch from a sugary beverage for a diet beverage, you’re often not changing other things in your diet,” says lead researcher Sara Bleich, associate professor in the department of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Bleich and other Johns Hopkins researchers used data from the 1999-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. For this study, published Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health, they analyzed participants’ recollection of what they’d had to eat and drink over the past 24 hours.
They found that about one in five overweight or obese American adults regularly drinks diet beverages -- that includes soda and low-calorie juices, teas and the like -- which is about twice the amount that healthy-weight adults are drinking. “On the one hand, that’s encouraging. People are being told if you need to cut calories from your diet, discretionary beverages are a great place to start,” Bleich says.
Diet soda consumption has increased steadily since 1965, when just 3 percent of Americans were regularly drinking the stuff, the study authors write. Sales of diet soda actually declined 7 percent last year, but Bleich thinks that just means habitual diet soda drinkers are switching to the many flavored teas, juices and vitamin-enhanced waters currently on store shelves.
Our bodies fight to try to keep our weight stable, which is one of the reasons weight loss is so hard —and it could help explain why overweight diet soda drinkers may be consuming more calories from solid food.
For slimmer people, the study suggests that diet drinks can contribute to weight maintenance, explains NBC News diet and health editor Madelyn Fernstrom.

Blood type diet not based in science, new study says

A popular diet plan claims our bodies process food differently, depending on our blood type. According to to new research from University of Toronto scientists, that idea is, well, mis-bleeding.
The theory is, if you’ve got type A (blood, not personality), your nutritional needs aren’t the same as someone with type O blood and you need to adapt your diet to help with weight loss and protect your heart. While earlier research has suggested that the blood-type plan — made famous by the book “Eat Right for Your Type” — does not contribute to weight loss because of a different meal plan for a specific type, no study has directly addressed the plan's specific claims.
Earlier work has pointed out that the calories for all blood type plans are reduced, and that these plans are all based an abundance of fruit and vegetables, heart-healthy proteins, and moderate fat. The new data did not find any association between the four blood types (type A, B, AB, and O) and health markers.
A total of 1,455 healthy research participants were studied. They received their blood type assignment, and baseline measure of health markers. Volunteers followed the specific diet assigned for that specific blood type, based on the book’s eating plan. They kept detailed Food Frequency Questionnaires for one month, and weight and health markers were repeated.
While the dieters did lose weight, and improved their blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides, there was no association found linking these changes to a specific blood type.
The bottom line? These data support that choosing any of these eating plans, independent of blood type, will promote good health. While the blood type theory might sound reasonable, the science does not support it.
As with any diet plan, choose one that you feel you can stick with for the long run. Make sure it is nutritionally sound and contains the foundation of healthy eating (with smaller portions for weight loss):
  • Rich in fruit and vegetables as the main source of carbohydrates
  • Moderate amounts of heart health fats
  • Lean proteins from both animal and plant sources
  • Limited amounts of fiber-rich starchy carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta, cereals)
The good news is that there are many ways to eat less and move more for both good health and weight loss.

What makes Olga run? Lessons from a 94-year-old track star

Ndërkohë, nëse Atletico Madridi e mposht Sevillan, atëherë do ta rrëmbejë pozitën e parë në tabelë.

Shpresa Kastratit iu dha lamtumira e fundit (Foto)

Ju lutem, festoni me zemër e jo me armë”, thotë Veselaj.

Real Madridi i supergolave, pushton majen

“Gabimi” i Laura Vorpsit
